Last Thursday’s collapse is still fresh in the Louisville Cardinals' minds.
They'll get one more shot at the No. 1 team in the country, Virginia, tomorrow (12 P.M., ESPN/ESPN2). This will be the Cavaliers first game in the ACC tournament. The Cards are fresh off an almost collapse against Florida State in the second round. With plenty at stake for both teams, this will be an interesting matchup.
Looking at Virginia
Obviously, the Cavs are great at defense. They lead the nation with 52.8 points allowed a game. It’s hard to score on them.
Oppositely, The Cavs find it just as hard to score. At 67.3 points per game, Virginia ranks 314th in scoring. They have plenty of talent. Their lack of offense is due more to do with how they play. It’s a known fact that Virginia loves to eat the clock.
Virginia does have some skill scoring. Kyle Guy, Ty Jerome, and Devon Hall all put up double figures almost every game. Jerome is especially dangerous. He leads the team in assists in addition to being their third-best scorer.
Tomorrow, I expect the basic UVA package: flat line defense, low scoring and clock-eating possessions.
Louisville must be angry about last week. The Cardinals played a fantastic game for the first 39 minutes, and then it collapsed. Fast-forward to Wednesday. The Cards allowed a massive lead to evaporate against Florida State.
However, the biggest positive (that isn’t Darius Perry or Dwayne Sutton) is that they’ve come to play in both the Virginia and Florida State games. This team knows when you get momentum against Virginia, you have to stay dialed in. You can’t stop hammering them.
Louisville learned that the hard way last week. They’ll more than likely remember tomorrow in Brooklyn. The Cards know they can beat this team. Goodbye bubble, hello tournament lock.
