December isn't a month known for soccer. Basketball season is just getting started. Unless you're in the Elite Eight and battling for a spot in the College Cup in Houston.
5-seed Stanford will visit Lynn Stadium for the second time in the stadium's few years to take on 4-seed Louisville. The winner will make a trip to Houston to compete in the Final Four and hope to win the College Cup.
The Cardinal (13-3-4) won the Pac-12 championship with a conference record of 8-1-1. In the NCAA Tournament they have defeated Pacific 2-0 and Virginia 1-0 (2OT). Foster Langsdorf leads the team with 14 goals on the year. Stanford is looking for their second straight championship.
The Cardinals (14-5-2) are hosting their third-straight home match this tournament. U of L finished second in the ACC Atlantic Division with a 5-2-1 conference record. Mohamed Thiaw has led the Cards with 12 goals, seven of them being game-winners. Tim Kubel has 11 assists and is for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy, which is the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer.
Series Record The two teams have played each other once- last year. Stanford visited Lynn Stadium early in the 2015 season and won 1-0.
Notes Goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland has recorded 10 shutouts this season, and has played a crucial role in the defense. Kubel is tied for most assists in a single season in school history with 11. He has 19 in his career at U of L. Kubel has the most career goals on the team with 15, Thiaw and Tate Schmitt both have 12. Kubel and Daniel Johnson were named to the 2016 ACC Championship All-Tournament Tournament. The 2016 team would be second in school history with 15 wins with a win on Saturday. The 2010 team recorded 20 wins.
Jared's Prediction It's the Elite Eight for a reason- the remaining teams are some of the best. Both teams have hot offense and can quickly drop three or four goals if you aren't careful. Cleveland's experience will play an important role for the U of L defense in this match, and Kubel will all but wrap-up the MAC Hermann Trophy by scoring a goal for the Cards. Louisville 3, Stanford 1
