A day after winning 16-4, The Louisville Cardinals had a little more stressful of a game.
They had a size-able lead midway-through the game, but gave up a ton of runs in the fifth. They defeated the West Carolina Catamounts, 8-7, in walk-off fashion.
Riley Thompson didn't have his best afternoon. One one hand, he had four innings of dominant ball. But the fifth killed his box score. West Carolina tallied seven runs, five earned, all from Thompson. The right-hander's ERA raised to 3.86. He only struck out three.
Josh Stowers notched Louisville's first run in the first. He looped a single over the shortstop's head, and drove in catcher Pat Rumoro from second. It was Stower's 11th RBI of the year.
Louisville's next run crossed the plate in the fourth. Devin Mann scored on a throwing error by the third-baseman. Then, Ethan Stringer scored on a fielding error by WCU's second-baseman. Next, Rumoro notched an RBI single to center. After four, Louisville led 4-0.
Erase some of the lead in the top of the fifth. Thompson loaded the bases with no outs, and the Catamounts hit an RBI double. Two runs scored. Then, WCU tallied another on an RBI groundout. Then, they tied on a catching error by Devin Mann. WCU gained the lead on an RBI triple.
The score was 6-4 WCU when Thompson was pulled from the game. The Catamounts hit an infield single to put it at 7-4.
Louisville wasn't finished. The net half-inning, they got one back. Stowers led the inning off with a triple to center. Then, Jake Snider recorded a sac-fly RBI to deep straightaway Center.
Then, the next inning, Louisville scored another two. Justin Lavey led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. Then, left-fielder Lucas Dunn notched an RBI double that got by the right-fielder. Tyler Fitzgerald hit into an RBI-ground-out to short to tie the game.
Logan Wyatt was the big hero in the bottom of the ninth. He ripped a single past the second baseman, scoring Josh Stowers from third for the winning-run.
The Cards extend their win streak to 10-0. They host Morehead State Tuesday, March 6th, at 3pm.
