There was a lot of hype behind the Louisville Cardinals in the Women's basketball tournament. The Cardinals were the one-seed, and slated to go far in the tournament.
They proved why in the first round. The Cardinals dominated the 16th-seed Boise State Broncos, 74-42, to advance to the round of 32. They moved another step closer to the Final Four.
It took a little while for the Cardinals to get going. Louisville had a 5-4 lead through the first five minutes of the first quarter. Then, Louisville outscored Boise State 16-7 in the last five minutes of the quarter. The Cards had a long 10-0 run midways through the last half of the second. Kylie Shook had a couple threes. Jaz Jones had two buckets. At the end of one, Louisville led 21-11.
Both teams scored 11 points in the second. Shooting wasn't good for either team. Louisville hit five of 15 from the field, and were 0 for 3 from beyond the arc. Boise State was even less efficient. The Broncos hit just three of 17. At halftime, the score was 32-22 Louisville.
The Cards shot 48.3 percent in the first. They were two for five from three, and hit two of three free-shots. The majority of offense was from Shook and Dunham. Shook had 10, and Dunham with 11. Myisha Hines-Allen had 0 points, but was strong off the glass, with nine boards. Asia Durr just had four points, and two rebounds.
Whatever Jeff Walz said during halftime must have worked. The Cardinals opened the floodgates, and went on a massive 18-2 run. Boise State's lone basket was from Marta Hermida, and was between two 9-0 runs. Louisville had a 26-point lead before Shalen Shaw connected on a layup to end the Bronco's drought. Overall, Louisville outscored Boise State 27-8 in the third. They turned a close-ish game into a blowout in just 10 minutes. Louisville led 59-30 heading into the final quarter.
Walz subbed out his starters in the fourth, and the Cards maintained, and finalized the win. Louisville outscored Boise State 15-12 to end the game.
Louisville shot 48.4 percent overall. They were two for 10 from three, and outscored Boise State 52-14 in the paint.
The Cards advance to the round of 32, and will play either Marquette or Dayton on Sunday. The gametime has not been announced. If Louisville wins the next matchup, they'll play in Lexington for the Sweet 16, and potentially the Elite 8.
