What a win by the Louisville men's soccer team! Tate Schmitt scored in overtime against UCLA for the win and helped the Cards advance to the third round of the NCAA Championships.
It has been an unusually warm season for soccer in The Ville so the cold night did not do U of L justice. However, UCLA is from a warm area so the cold weather wasn't in their favor either. Don't worry, I hate the cold too.
Jack Gayton scored two minutes into the game. Tim Kubel lined up for a free kick and sent it to the far side of the box, where Gayton patiently waited to score his third goal of the season.
Louisville maintained control in the first half, delivering numerous shots, but the Bruins' goalkeeper held true. He recorded nine saves on the night. Although the Cards couldn't score again in the first half they went into halftime with the 1-0 cushion.
The second half was more even. Stefan Cleveland attempted to clear the ball, but it was deflected off of a UCLA player and the Bruins' leading scorer Abu Danladi put the equalizer in at the 59 minute mark. A late surge by Louisville toward the end of regulation resulted in nothing and the game went into sudden death overtime.
Overtime didn't last long, as Schmitt scored just 3:55 in. Danny Reynolds drove against the UCLA defense before passing across the box to Schmitt, who headed it in for the win.
The win advanced the Cards into the third round of the tournament and a 13-5-2 record. Louisville's opponent is the Irish of Notre Dame. In their only meeting of the season Louisville walked away with a 1-0 victory over the then-#1 ranked Irish. Kickoff is set for 5:00 pm.m, on Sunday, November 27, at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. Let's pray for warmer weather- I like to be able to feel my hands.
