how long can the streak last?

You may have heard, the Louisville Cardinals women’s basketball team is pretty good. They’re ranked third, and have been for weeks. They’re currently on their best start in program history, sitting at 16-0, and will try to break the longest win streak in program history tonight, against No. 17 Duke. While this may be a fantastic start, it’s extremely rare that a team can go undefeated, and it’s just a matter of time before the Cards are handed their first loss of the season.
It could be tonight, but after witnessing what the team has done all season, the safe bet is on the team to survive the Blue Devils. I believe Louisville’s first loss will come incredibly late, at Connecticut on February 12th. That’s including a matchup against No. 2 Notre Dame next Thursday, and against No. 11 Florida State on January 21st.
Any other year, I’d think Louisville would be good, but wouldn’t defeat Uconn or Notre Dame, widely considered the class of the nation. But Louisville has thrived in every single test this season, against great teams.
First, they beat No. 5 Ohio State in Columbus. Then, they dominate No. 24 Michigan at home, before pummeling No. 10 Oregon. All three games were in a four-game stretch. To follow, they scored their highest point total against Murray State on Black Friday.
To further illustrate, they defeated once-ranked Kentucky by 24 in Lexington. Nine of their first 16 wins were against teams in the RPI top 100. Six were against teams in the top-50.
They’re that good.
Everyone on the team can have a huge night. While many fans think of Asia Durr and Myisha Hines-Allen for the bulk of Louisville’s box score, anyone on the team can have a good night. Sam Fuehring can get a few boards, and is shooting almost .600. Dana Evans and Arica Carter lead the team in assists. Kylee Shook has 26 blocks.
But the most impressive players are Durr and Hines-Allen. Durr has scored more than 20 on five occasions, and dropped 47 on Ohio State. She made 38 in late December. Hines-Allen has six double-doubles so far.
This dominance can’t last forever. Three of their next five are against teams in the top-20. They still have one game against UConn left. But with how great this team has been, they have the potential to extend this streak to over 20 games. I believe they’re as good as Notre Dame, and could survive a tough contest. I think Louisville could beat UConn at home, but with the game in Storrs, I’m not very sure. I honestly think Louisville will lose a close game against the Huskies in the regular season, but may meet them in the tournament.
Regardless, one win against either of the top teams would be great. It would solidify Louisville as one of the top in the nation.
But, the first game comes tonight, against No. 17 Duke, tonight at 7pm at the KFC Yum! Center. If you haven’t seen them this season, it’ll be a good night to start. Tickets are lower than $10.00.
