The Louisville Bats’ offense exploded for the second consecutive game. Louisville put up eight runs in two innings, gave up six in the eighth, un-tied the game, and defeated the Toledo Mud Hens, 12-9. Louisville starter Lucas Sims also threw his 100th strikeout of 2019 during the game taking the International League lead. Brian O’Grady hit eight RBIs, the most of any Louisville Bat.
Louisville scored four in the first and second. All eight were attributed to Mud Hens starter Drew VerHagen. The Tigers organizational arm only threw 1.2 before being pulled. He gave up eight hits and three walks, while only striking out one.
Toledo led briefly. Jacob Robson drove in Danny Woodrow in the first inning on a groundout to second.
In the bottom of the first, Josh VanMeter hit his first triple of 2019, on a grounder to right. Alex Blandino scored on the play. Then, Brian O’Grady singled. Nick Longhi drove in Brian O’Grady on a sacrifice to right.
Then, in the second, Christian Colon opened scoring on a single to center. Then, Brian O’Grady hit his 23rd home run to right center field, plating three runs.
Aristides Aquino homered for the 21st time to right center field in the fourth. It was a solo shot.
Sims went five innings, and allowed just the one earned run. He also allowed four hits and four walks, while striking out five.
Toledo got one run back in the sixth. Woodrow singled to center, plating Dustin Peterson. Then, they added another run on a single in the seventh.
The Mud Hens added to their comeback attempt in the eighth. Dawel Lugo hit a two-run single to center. Then, Dustin Peterson added another run on a single to center. Mikie Mahtook hit a three-run blast to tie the game.
O’Grady made it his sixth multi-homer game in the bottom of the eighth. His 24th home run scored three runs, and put Louisville up by three.
Louisville moves to 35-57. Tomorrow, RHP Vladimir Gutierrez (2-7, 7.04) takes on LHP Tyler Alexander (3-9, 5.91).
