The Louisville Bats faced a familiar foe, and finally got to him.
Kyle Funkhouser threw 12 games for the Toledo Mud Hens so far this season. In three starts against the Bats, Funkhouser allowed three earned runs in 13 innings pitched (2.08 ERA). Against all other International League teams, he surrendered 31 runs in 23 innings (12.13 ERA).
His number was up on Friday. The Bats got to him early, and downed the Tigers prospect 7-6.
Toledo gained the lead in the second inning. Dawel Lugo hit an RBI single off Alex Wood, plating Ronny Rodriguez. Then, Dustin Peterson plated Lugo on a single.
Louisville belted Funkhouser for five runs in the bottom of the second. Nick Longhi singled in Brian O’Grady. Then, Stuart Turner hit a grounder to center, adding another run. Blake Trahan and Alex Blandino also singled in one run each. Josh VanMeter sacrificed himself in a double play, scoring Trahan to end the inning.
Dawel Lugo scored Danny Woodrow and Ronny Rodriguez on his 17th double. Wood was responsible for one run.
Wood, down on a rehab start, pitched two innings and surrendered three runs, two earned, on four hits and no walks. He struck out two.
Louisville got both runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Blandino plated Turner. Then, Christian Colon singled to center, scoring Trahan.
Ronny Rodriguez and Mikie Mahtook both homered in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. They cut Louisville’s lead to one entering the bottom of the sixth.
Louisville moves to 34-57. Lucas Sims (5-0, 4.74) takes on Drew VerHagen (4-2, 3.40). The game is at 6:30 pm.
