The Louisville Cardinals won their first ACC series of the season. They defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels, 6-4, in the second game of the series.
Shay Smiddy received the nod from Dan McDonnell to start, and performed well. He went five innings, and gave up three hits, two runs, one earned, and reduced his ERA to 0.61. It was his second win of the season.
The Cards were down by two early. Smiddy gave up his two runs in the top of the third. It was on a single through the left side, scoring one runner. A second scored on the same play, after an error by left-fielder Danny Oriente.
In the bottom of the inning, the Cards struck back. Devin Mann hit a double deep to the gap in left-center, and scored three runs. The ball was so deep, it would have been a home run if the temperature was higher than 70 degrees. But, the Louisville Cardinals had the 3-2 lead heading into the fourth.
Louisville extended the lead in the next inning. Right-fielder Ethan Stringer hit a single to left that scored third-baseman Justin Lavey from second. It was Stringer's ninth season RBI. Then, Designated Hitter Jake Snider belted an RBI double to the corner that scored two. After four, Louisville led 6-2.
North Carolina got one back in the sixth. Catcher Brandon Martorano hit an RBI double to left-center. Then, in the eighth, Ben Casparius looped a grounder into center, and drove across a run.
Preseason stopper of the year and All-American Sam Bordner came on in the ninth to close out the game, and earn his sixth save of the year.
Louisville moves to 14-0. They look for the sweep tomorrow at noon. The game will be at Patterson Stadium.
