In a rematch from earlier in the season the Louisville men's soccer team topped Notre Dame once again. The 3-1 victory advances the Cards to the Elite Eight.
In their first match-up Notre Dame visited as the number one team in the country. The Irish fell to the Cards 1-0 that night, followed by a football 63-20 victory over Florida State the day after.
The crowd was on their feet celebrating with 10 minutes remaining as the Louisville Louligans paraded around Lynn Stadium leading cheers and songs.
Cherif Dieye took a combined pass from Mohamed Thiaw and Daniel Johnson to score with six seconds remaining to put the icing on the cake. Dieye has stepped up recently for U of L and his hard work paid off with his fifth goal of the year.
Louisville went into halftime up 1-0 before Notre Dame's Jon Gallagher scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season at the 53' mark.
Thiaw, who got an assist late in the game, got the scoring started at the 15' mark. He received a pass by Tim Kubel and scored his 12th goal of the year. It was the only goal scored in the first half.
Tate Schmitt got his fifth goal of the year off of a corner from Danny Reynolds. The goal came at the 70' mark and proved to be the game-winner.
The win improves U of L to 14-5-2. The quarterfinal will be held on Saturday, December 3, at 7:00 p.m., against the winner of Stanford and Virginia.
