The Louisville Cardinals turned a halftime deficit into a blowout win… on the road.
Louisville travelled to John Paul Jones Arena, and captained a 71-49 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers. Dana Evans and Sam Fuehring led the Cardinals in the win. While the Cardinals were out-rebounded 38-27, they forced 18 Cavalier turnovers, and garnered 20 points off of them. Comparatively, Virginia forced six, and scored just one two-point bucket off turnovers.
The game was tied after the first quarter ended. Both teams kept trading buckets. Virginia made a layup 36 seconds into the game. Then, Bionca Dunham scored a basket in the paint. The largest lead of the period was a three-point advantage for the Cardinals, which happened twice in the period.
Virginia opened the second period with a 10-0 run spanning over three minutes. Sam Fuehring made a three-pointer to jump-start a short, 7-2 Louisville run. Louisville scored four points within the last 90 seconds of the period to cut the Virginia lead to three entering halftime.
At halftime, Virginia looked extremely different from when they lost 91-43 to Louisville on January 17th.
Then, Louisville roared in the third period. The Cardinals opened on a 16-2 run, turning the three-point Cavalier lead into an 11-point Louisville advantage. The Cavs ran out of steam; when they scored a pair of buckets, Asia Durr and Evans hit a pair of threes. The Cardinals held Virginia to just nine points in the period.
Louisville’s dominance continued into the fourth. The Cardinals hit a 19-2 run in the middle portion of the fourth period, and garnered a 24-point lead. Virginia did not attempt to foul, and let the fourth close calmly.
The Cardinlas shot 45 percent for the game, after hitting 66.7 percent for the second-half. The Cardinals also hit 7 of 11 from beyond the arc. They were 45 and 37 percent for the game, respectively.
The Cardinals are now 24-2, and 11-2 in the ACC. They face off against Boston College on Sunday, at the KFC Yum! Center. It is the penultimate game of the home schedule.
