It was reported Saturday night that Louisville Men’s Basketball head coach Rick Pitino was interested in the vacant head coach position at UNLV (as reported by the Las Vegas Review Journal.) It was said Pitino would want to bring his son Richard Pitino, who is the current head Men’s Basketball coach at Minnesota, to Las Vegas with him as a coach-in-waiting.
Sources from the University of Louisville have denied these rumors saying there has been no discussion of Pitino leaving. UNLV has a history with coach Pitino. In 2001, UNLV was heavily perusing him to take over their head coaching job. In the end, he chose a job at Louisville.
Louisville extended Pitinos contract last summer through the 2025-26 season, worth 50.9 million over the next 10 years. His salary will increase .6 million dollars from this season to the next.
When confronted about these rumors, Coach Pitino responded by saying “My only interest in beating Florida State.” Florida State is the Cardinals next opponent on Wednesday night. The 2015-16 season has been full of distractions thus far for the Cardinals. First, the allegations of a former assistant coach paying strippers to have sex with recruits. And now, the possibility of losing one of the best coaches the sport of basketball has ever seen.
But we all have to take the same approach as coach Pitino, focus all of our attention on Wednesday night’s game vs Florida State.
