This weekend the Cardinals men's soccer team played two matches at home to open the season.
On Friday, they hosted Butler, a team that was not ranked at the time, but could get to that point with ease. In a showdown of goalkeepers, they met each other save for save and neither flinched. With one of the largest crowds Lynn Stadium has seen energy levels were high. The match went to extra time, but neither keeper would be beaten, and the match ended in a draw.
On Monday, the Cards hosted Quinnipiac. Mo Thiaw opened the scoring for Louisville in the second half, only to be equalized before the Cards even finished celebrating. This match also went to extra time, and a few minutes into the first half of golden goal extra time, the Cards were awarded a free kick about 40 yards out. Danny Reynolds took the kick and served in a cross, but didn't get enough backspin on the ball. With a little help from the wind and a lot of luck, the free kick sailed into the net in the upper 90, and the Cards won 2-1. Reynolds' kick make it on ESPN and Sports Center highlights.
The Cards travel to Connecticut and face UConn Friday, and to Lexington for the Battle of the Bluegrass on Tuesday. Tickets for Tuesday's rivalry match and the Louligans, the soccer supporter group, bus trip are on sale on the U of L athletic ticket website. The price for a ticket is $5, and bus trip tickets (with your ticket and a meal included) are $10 for students and $15 for all others.
