Cards Suffer first loss of season
While field hockey was celebrating a victory just a few blocks down the road the women's soccer team was battling frustration in their 2-0 loss to Marquette. Both goals by the Golden Eagles were scored in the second half.
Louisville's offense never really got going either half, totaling seven shots on the match with four being on goal. The Golden Eagles had the same number, but were more efficient.
The score remained a 0-0 tie at halftime, but didn't remain long that way in the second half. A hand ball call by the assistant referee inside the box on Inger Katrine Bjerke sent fans into a frenzy in disagreement. Ryley Bugay took the penalty shot the opposite way goalkeeper Gabriele Kouzelos went.
One controversial call seemed to have an effect on the entire roster for UofL as none of them were able to focus the remainder of the match. Eli Beard found and out-of-position Kouzelos for a 40-yard goal.
The loss destroys any hope of a perfect season as the Cards drop to 3-1. They travel to Lexington on Friday, September 1, to face the Kentucky Wildcats.
