In an unusual Wednesday night game the Louisville volleyball team defeated Notre Dame 3-1 (22-25, 25-25-21, 25-20, 25-22) at the KFC Yum! Center. Notre Dame falls to 19-8 and 10-5 in the ACC. Louisville improves to 9-16 and 4-11 in conference play.
The Irish came into the game favored to win, but had difficulty pulling away in the first set. The score was tied at 3-3 before Notre Dame went on a 7-3 run, causing Coach Kordes to take a timeout. Louisville battled to make it 15-12 in favor of the Irish before Notre Dame called a timeout. The Cards fought to bring the score within one a couple of times late, but pulled away at the end.
U of L bounced back in the second set with a victory and to go into halftime tied. Things were pretty even until Louisville went on a run for 14-8 lead and a Notre Dame timeout. The Irish weren't willing to give up so easily and brought the score within three before Morgan Miller's kill claimed the set.
After halftime Louisville was firing on all cylinders and shocked the Irish. Louisville led 8-2 and 14-9 before the Irish stormed back to tie the set at 16. U of L never looked back the remainder of the set.
In the fourth and final set hopes were high for the upset. Neither team could gain much of an edge until the Cards turned an 11-9 lead into a 17-10 advantage and Notre Dame timeout. The Irish clawed their way back at times, but Louisville sealed the deal 25-22.
U of L had 13 service errors on the night- not a pretty stat. However, a pair of Cardinals had double-doubles. Miller had 14 kills and 18 assists while Melanie McHenry 14 kills and 18 digs. Janelle Jenkins was back to full health and tacked on another 13 kills. Molly Sauer had a game high 38 digs.
Louisville hosts Virginia on Friday, November 11, at Cardinal Arena.
