Preview of Softball vs. Florida State
Wrapping up the season the University of Louisville softball team heads to Tallahassee to take on Florida State. The Seminoles have already claimed the ACC title with a current conference record of 19-1. The Cardinals sit in second at 14-6 with Notre Dame in a close third at 11-6.
No. 5 Florida State will be no easy task for Louisville, who is coming off of a 1-1 split at Notre Dame last weekend. The Seminoles are coming off of a mercy rule victory over their in-state rival Florida A&M.
Coming back from the Sunshine State with a series win will be no easy task. Even claiming one win out of the three game series will prove to be a challenge. The Cards will heavily rely on their pitching stars, junior Maryssa Becker and freshman Megan Hensley, who have also provided a major offensive boost. Sophomore Sidney Melton has played a crucial role in the hot offense as she leads the team in runs scored. Redshirt sophomore Nicole Pufahl is on a hot streak at the plate and a couple of hits from her could spark a rally.
UofL has struggled with finding a consistent offense this season. It has been a common theme to see a mercy rule victory one day and then scraping by with one or two runs in that same series. Finding a way to score double-digit runs will be a key to victory. Thus year's defense has been mistake-prone. There have been games where the defense wound up with three or four errors. The FSU offense, which is one of t most dominant in the nation, will take full advantage of any defensive errors.
Last season UofL claimed one victory while Florida State took the series with the two other wins. I predict that is what will happen this year. UofL is an excellent team, but Florida State is ranked fifth for a reason. Playing at FSU will also create a major advantage for the Seminoles, as well.
The series will be shown on ESPN3. UofL softball's Twitter account will also be live tweeting during the games to help keep fans updated.
