The sports are back. The seemingly extended hiatus from UofL sports has come to an end as we edge closer to the beginning of the fall semester.
To help kick things off the men and women's soccer teams hosted a doubleheader at Lynn Stadium. The games were scrimmages and the last chance to get practice in before the true season starts in a few days.
Despite the games being scrimmages and competing against a record Louisville City FC crowd downtown Lynn Stadium saw a large crowd that filled up most of the chair-back seats.
Women's Soccer The women hosted DePaul at 5:30. Many familiar faces were in the starting lineup, but fans also saw a few new faces in there too. Freshmen Taylor Kerwin (Whitefish Bay, Wis) and Emina Enic (Louisville, KY- duPont Manual) got called in for the start.
At goalkeeper Gabrielle Kouzelos seemed to be number one with Tori Gabor close behind. This could be a battle back-and-forth all season between two of the most talented goalkeepers the Cards have seen in quite some time.
Shelby Cohen was on the bench for the game and will remain there all season with an ACL injury. The loss of Cohen is a major blow to the defense. Niamh Nelson had her foot in a boot, but is expected to be back in late August.
Louisville took the win over the Blue Demons 2-0 with goals by Brooklyn Rivers and Kennadi Carbin.
The women host Boston Friday evening for their season opener and turn around to host Miami (OH) on Sunday.
Men's Soccer The men followed behind with a 7:30 kickoff. With a few of last season's starters going pro the starting lineup was shaken up. Mohammed Thiaw did not play due to a minor injury.
This year's squad has two graduate students on the team: Walker Andriot and Campbell Wayland. Both players were starters at their previous schools, but surprisingly neither started for the Cards.
Will Meyer got the call at goalkeeper, but shared time with Jake Gelnovatch. Both keepers had solid saves against a tough Lipscomb team.
UofL secured the win 1-0 thanks to an early goal by Cherif Dieye.
The men have exhibitions against Indiana and Oakand in the upcoming week. UC Irvine visits Lynn Stadium on August 25 for the first official match of the season.
