Louisville softball kicked off their season today in Orlando in the UCF Friends of Jaclyn Invitational. The Cards faced Butler at noon and then took on host Central Florida shortly after.
Game One: Louisville 5, Butler 2
Megan Hensley got the start on the mound. With the departure of Maryssa Becker, Hensley took over the role as the ace this year. Most of the starting lineup was on the roster last year with Kyra Snyder being the only new face.
The Bulldogs got on the board early in the first with a pair of hits and an error by the Cards. Louisville responded an inning later to tie the game. An error helped the Cards take the lead in the fourth. They tacked on a run in the fifth off a pair of hits and scored one more in the seventh, thanks to a trio of wild pitches.
Blaire Bass went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the win. Hensley took the win after scattering five hits and striking out seven.
Game Two: Louisville 5, UCF 3
Danielle Watson took the mound to start this game. Maddy Newman also saw her first start in right field. Snyder came in late in the game to close it out and secure the win.
The Cards were first up in their second game and quickly took a three run lead with smart base running. The Knights scored their first run in the fifth off of a pair of hits. Jenna Jordan hit a two run home run- the first homer of the season for Louisville- in the sixth to extend the lead. UCF loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but was held to just two runs.
Bass led the way again, this time going 2-for-3 and one RBI. Watson took the win, allowing four hits and recording five strikeouts.
Louisville starts the season 2-0, thanks to a solid offensive outing. They take on North Florida and North Carolina tomorrow and Illinois on Sunday to close out the Invitational.
