Bowling Green, Ohio- Starting off the season winning three straight matches is never a bad way to go. Just a year out from dropping their first match of the season to Illinois, the Louisville volleyball team turned things around, winning 3-1, 3-0, and 3-2.
In their first match of the season, the 23-ranked faced Oakland. Led by freshman Melanie McHenry's 24 kills, U of L easily disposed of Bowling Green 25-17, 27-25, 29-30, 25-19 in the Hampton Inn Classic. Senior Ashley Pettibone had a strong serving outing, putting pressure on the Grizzlies' defense. Also, red-shirt sophomore Kali Eaken got her first start as setter, which Coach Anne Kordes was pleased with.
In match two, U of L faced Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and won 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-23). The Rams forced the Cards to go deep into each set, helping build experience for later in the season. McHenry and sophomore Jasmine Bennett were in the double-digits for kills. Reigning ACC freshman of the year and defensive player of the year Molly Sauer led the team with 15 digs.
The following day, Louisville faced the host team, Bowing Green State. This was the toughest match-up for the Cards, who won 3-2 (15-25, 25-18. 25-22, 17-25, 15-11).
