After being preseason No. 21, the University of Louisville volleyball team has been on a downward slope. The latest struggles include a 3-0 loss to Kentucky, before hanging on to defeat Lipscomb 3-2.
Thursday evening UK visited the KFC Yum! Center. Fans swarmed into the arena to give the team one of the largest crowds in history. However, the crowd had little impact on the outcome as the Wildcats defeated the Cardinals 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-9). UK was rolling on all cylinders and the Cards were not.
Part of the reasons for the loss include two injuries- Kali Eaken and Jasmine Bennett out with concussions- and senior Janelle Jenkins in the hospital with an illness. Kentucky's Leah Edmond led with 13 kills, and numerous other UK players had eight or nine kills. Kentucky also had four aces and nine blocks on route to a blowout victory.
The following evening, Friday night, U of L moved to Cardinal Arena to host Lipscomb. The Cards won 3-2 (27-25, 26-24, 23-25, 18-25, 15-12). Still dealing with injuries and illness, the limited Cardinals lead 2-0 at halftime before allowing Lipscomb to make a comeback. The fifth set went back and forth until U of L pulled away late.
Louisville is now 5-5 on the season and begin conference play on the road against Notre Dame and Florida State.
