cards seek elusive bowl eligibility against cavs
Will the Cards finally obtain bowl eligibility tomorrow? Maybe. The Cards host the 6-3 Virginia Cavaliers at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium at 3:30 pm.
Previewing the Cavaliers
The good news, Virginia has the 92nd offense in the nation and are without a rushing QB. The bad: they have the 30th total defense.
Virginia’s offense is led by Senior QB Kurt Benkert. He’s not bad. He’s thrown for 20 TDs and only had 6 picks. He’s also diversified who scores his touchdowns, as three receivers are apart from the rest. Their receiving TD leader is Senior WR Andre Levrone (6) followed by Senior WR Doni Dowling (5) and Jr RB Olamide Zaccheaus (4). The latter also received the most passes, with 66 for 683 yards.
Rushing, the team is led by Jr RB Jordan Ellis. His 708 yards from 170 attempts dwarfs his other teammates, as the next closest in attempts only had 26 thus far. It’s this one-sided rushing attack that led to Virginia’s 111th overall rushing attack.
Defensively, the Cavaliers are a good squad. They only allow 25.3 points per game, and have 12 picks, with one pick-six, to their credit.
The Cavaliers also have not played many tough teams. Virginia’s best opponent is Georgia Tech. The Cavaliers defeated the Yellow Jackets 40-36 last week.
What to expect
If Louisville is going to win, they’d better do it tomorrow. Syracuse runs a quick-tempo offense, and has a rushing QB, as does Kentucky. The Cards don’t want to back themselves in a corner. On paper, this should be an easy victory, but, I have a bad feeling about this.
Louisville’s defense has done a fantastic job at making bad offenses look good. Virginia has done an Ok job against some mediocre teams. I feel this is a recipe for disaster. All Virginia must do to beat Louisville is a quick screen, or slant over middle.
It’ll be close, but I feel this will be a Louisville loss.
