Brazil Protests: President Lula vows to punish Congress invaders

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the current president of Brazil has said that he will be punishing the protesters who invaded the Brazil Congress. Protesters who invaded the Brazil Congress, were the supporters of the ex-president, Jair Bolsonaro. These protestors also targeted the Supreme court building and the Presidential palace. Protests were silenced on Sunday evening as police managed to take over the protesters who had held these buildings hostage. The police had to use their force against protesters as they violently clashed with the authorities. President Lula personally later toured the Supreme court premises to see the damages caused by protesters to the site. During his statement regarding the event, Lula made it clear that the protesters will be punished for their actions.

Just a week before on January 1st, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was inaugurated as the president of the country. Lula defeated the far-right leader, Jair Bolsonaro During the elections held on October 30, 2022, to become the 39th President of Brazil. This was not praised by the supporters of Jair Bolsonaro as they expressed their rage by protesting during this week. Thousands of protesters who were wearing the jersey of the Brazilian football team and holding Brazil flags stormed towards the Supreme Court, Presidential palace, and Brazil Congress. These riots were done with the sole purpose of holding government officials and offices hostage in an attempt to express their dislike towards newly appointed President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Because of this, Lula was forced to declare an emergency in the Brazilian capital, Brasília. Later, Lula also dispatched a team of national guards to the capital. Police were involved later as the protesters started using violent measures and causing damage to the government buildings. Flavio Dino, the Justice Minister of Brazil, said that the Brazilian police have arrested over 200 protesters so far.

President Lula said that there has been no such event in the history of Brazil where such events have been mentioned and that these actions chosen by protesters are a pure act of vandals and fascists. He further took a shot at the security agencies in the country which failed to address the violent protesters in time which resulted in such damage to the government buildings. He said that many images are being surfaced where police can be seen helping the protesters in finding their way. In many images, police and other security officials can be seen having fun and taking pictures as protesters were doing their violent actions. He later vowed that whoever financed these protesters will pay for their actions according to the power of law.

On the other hand, many believe that the actions of the former president have caused his supporters to break into chaos. Jair Bolsonaro has repeatedly been denying that he lost the elections held on October 30 of last year and has been blaming his rival Lula for malpractice in elections. He even left the country during new year’s eve when Lula was going to be inaugurated as the new president of the country. After the violent protests in the country's capital, Bolsonaro denied the accusations of him leading his supporters to protest violently in the capitol.
