Vegan product contaminated with pathogen bacteria Listeria - healing practice

Listeria detected in vegan cheese

The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety and a French manufacturer of cheese alternatives warn of a vegan almond milk cheese in which pathogenic Listeria bacteria have been detected. Consumption is strongly discouraged. There is a risk of flu-like illnesses, which can be dangerous for certain groups of people.

The company Jay&Joy recalls the product "Joséphine, fermented and matured vegetable alternative to almond milk" from the sale. All goods in the 90 gram cardboard box with the best before date of August 07, 2022 are affected.

Where was the vegan cheese sold?

While almond milk cheese was primarily sold in France, it was also occasionally sold in various organic, farmer's and delicatessen shops in Germany and Austria.

According to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, the cheese alternative was mainly marketed in the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony, from North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia.

How does a Listeria infection manifest?

Listeria monocytogenes bacteria have been detected in vegan cheese. The bacteria can cause flu-like illnesses, which can manifest as fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Symptoms after infection usually become noticeable a few hours to six days after consumption. In some cases, however, the incubation period can be 14 days or more, making it more difficult to associate with the contaminated food.

Certain groups of people are particularly at risk

In healthy people, the evolution of listeriosis is often weak. Certain groups of people, such as newborns, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and people with weakened immune systems, are at increased risk of serious developments that can lead to sepsis.

In pregnant women, Listeria bacteria can infect the unborn child, which can be fatal for the unborn child. The manufacturer advises to consult a doctor if symptoms such as fever or headache occur after consuming the product. A possible Listeria infection must be reported.

Discard affected products at the point of sale

According to the manufacturer, the affected lot has been withdrawn from sale. But some products have already been sold, warns the company Jay & Joy. Anyone who has purchased the vegan cheese mentioned above must hand it over to the respective point of sale and be reimbursed for the purchase price.
